FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN REGARD TO THE MADELIA NUISANCE ORDINANCE


1. I have some concrete blocks that I no longer need how do I dispose of them? If you have a wheel barrow full or less you can dispose of them at the compost site. If you have any amount more than a wheel barrow full you should contact the Street Department at 642-3446 for information about a disposal site.

2. I have an old television antenna and some steel clothes lines poles, how do I dispose of them? The Madelia Street Department will pick up any steel or metal products on Tuesday – May 13 (north side of the city) or Wednesday – May 14 (south side of the city).

3. I have a number of old tires next to my storage shed that are holding down a tarp in my yard, how long can I keep them? You should dispose of them as soon as possible. With the potential exposure you are giving to your self and your neighbors with the West Nile Virus in Watonwan County, it is very important that old tires are either stored inside of a building or disposed of as soon as possible.

4. I have a number of bags of leaves that I kept around my house this past winter, how do I dispose of them? The compost site is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays. As soon as it is feasible in the spring of the year you should take your bags of leaves to the compost site.

5. I have a car which has new stereo speakers installed and I really like loud music, will I be stopped by a police officer if I am driving around the community and having my radio, cd player or tape player, turned up really loud? Yes, you may be stopped if your music is plainly audible at a distance of fifty (50) feet. In addition to permanently affecting your hearing, you are may be disturbing the peace of other individuals in the community.

The violation is a misdemeanor.

6.  have a wood burning fire place, can I have stacks of pallets scattered in my back yard. Please have wood piles stacked neatly. You should make sure that weeds do not grow up around the pile and keep the area free of food or other items that may attract rodents.

7. I like to work on restoring vehicles and doing routine maintenance on my vehicles, can I do this in my yard? Routine maintenance such as oil changes and head light replacement is permitted. Accumulation of car parts and waste oil is not permitted. Vehicle restoration or major overhauls are permitted only if the vehicle is in an enclosed garage or building. Colored tarps used to cover inoperable or unregistered vehicles in a yard is not permitted by the ordinance.

8. I notice that people set out in the boulevard useable furniture and appliances for others to take, it this allowed? Placement of furniture and white goods is not permitted unless garbage stickers are affixed or the items are set out as part of Watonwan County’s curbside giveaway, which occurs one weekend in May and September. If your furniture is useable, please consider donating it to a thrift store, Salvation Army or other charity.

9. Where can I obtain a complete copy of the ordinance? The ordinance is available at the Madelia Branch of the Watonwan County Library, at City Hall and can be viewed on the city web site (www.madeliamn.com).
